Breffu was an enslàved woman at a plantation in Coral Bay in today’s United States Virgin Islands. On the 23rd of November 1733, after hearing the signal of a canon firè from Fort Fredericksvaern, Breffu entered the plantation’s main house and kill£d both the slàve master and his wife. Taking all the gùnpowder, ammùnition and accompanied by fellow enslàved fòlks , Breffu then proceeded to another plantation house, where she kill£d three members of the family. As the reb£llion wèakened, she and 23 other rebèls c0mmitted sùicide to evàde càpture and their b0dies were disc0vered at Browns Bay. After the rev0lt, a plàntation owner stated: “one of the leaders of the reb£llion, Breffu, whom none of us knew, and whom we assumed to be a màn having murd£red my son and his wife, is a woman!”This story is know as the Akwamu slàve rev0lt of 1733.
