The colonizers once claimed that our ancestors lacked cultural value, yet the stunning treasures they looted from Africa and placed in their museums tell a different story. Before they put their feet in Africa, we built kingdoms which were renowned for their advanced political systems, cultural heritage, and artistic achievements. Picture :The King Oba and Queen Edo brass artworks are iconic representations of the Benin Kingdom located in present-day southern Nigeria, crafted by skilled Edo bronze casters. These artworks date back to the height of the Benin Empire (13th–19th centuries) and were created to honor the Obas (kings) and important figures, such as Queen Idia, the mother of Oba Esigie. These brass and bronze sculptures, often plaques and statues, depict the Oba's divine authority and royal court life. The art pieces, known for their intricate detail and symbolism, were displayed in the royal palace as historical records and spiritual objects. Today, they are globally recognized as masterpieces of African art.
