KING MZEE GUGE
They brought us a book in which it is written, “You shall not kill,” yet they killed our brothers. They told us that no one is greater than another, that we are all equal before God, yet they turned our grandfathers into slaves and made themselves masters. They told us that God, through that book, says “You shall not steal,” yet they stole our land. They told us “You shall not commit adultery,” yet they raped our grandmothers. They told us it is written that “You shall have no foreign gods,” yet they brought us gods from Europe and Mecca. They told us it is a sin to bear false witness against your neighbor, yet they called our continent a dark continent, a land without any civilization. They said we were savages and pagans. They told us to trust in the God of the books look now, Africa’s situation has only worsened!Who among you has ever been fed by ravens like Elijah?Who has ever been healed of disease like Naaman?Who has ever attained wealth like Solomon by trusting the Bible?Who has ever woken up to find their granaries miraculously full of food?Who has ever commanded rain to fall?Is there anyone who has ever foretold future calamities so that people could prepare, like Joseph did?Who, by faith, has ever attained the wealth of Abraham?By your faithfulness, have you ever become a ruler like Daniel?Africa has not benefited at all from these stories. Look at Sudan there is no miracle of ravens feeding God’s people there. Believers die of hunger just as pagans do.Look at Congo no hero like Samson has ever been born to free the people from the hands of the Philistines (the West).Look at Libya why did they crucify Jesus with their own hands while thinking Westerners were righteous people?Do you think disease, hunger, and poverty are things too great for this miracle-working God to overcome?Africans have been in bondage for over 400 years from the era of Arabs, Europeans, to the present age of neocolonialism yet we have not seen any rebuke or punishment directed at our oppressors.Or are we not children of that God?If we are His children, what plan does He have for Africans? Why do all the examples in the Bible and the Qur’an not work today in Africa? And if these books were truly books of noble and truthful people, why were they spread at the barrel of a gun?Did Charlemagne (8th–9th century) not forcibly baptize the Saxons by the sword in order to make them Christians? Was the Massacre of Verden (782 CE) not reported as one of the most brutal events in history, where in a single day 4,500 people who refused baptism were killed?Did Muhammad not convert societies to Islam by the sword? Was the tax (jizya) not imposed on all who rejected Islam, while those who accepted it were given status within society and the state? But let us go further back which African tradition or culture was ever spread by the sword?Despite being called savages, we respected Ubuntu. The Ngoni invaded Songea, but they did not spread their culture across all of Tanganyika by force of the sword. The Maasai moved as far as Tanganyika but who was ever forced to believe in Maasai customs?Who was ever captured by force and compelled to accept Sukuma beliefs or be killed? If any belief or tradition sought to dominate Africa by the sword, then Kemet would have been the first to rule Africa through religion and philosophy but they did not.Europeans and Arabs claim to spread humanity, yet they lack humanity.Who today can strike another person even a single slap simply because they refuse to accept their belief? If none exists, then know that Europeans and Arabs were capable of this. Not just slaps they cut off hands and legs, and even killed. Many societies accepted certain religions out of fear, not free will.In Tarime, at a Seventh-day Adventist school known as Muderspach Memorial Adventist School, there is a pit located behind the dining hall, which stories say was used to hang Black Africans during colonial times yet no one speaks about this history. People pass by as if nothing ever happened.Who does not know that mission stations were used as strategic tools of colonialism? Do you think they were merely centers of spiritual nurturing?Do you think I speak with this pain for no reason? It is because our elders were wounded to the point of shedding their own blood not the blood of their livestock.Should we continue to heal the future, or should we keep reminding ourselves of the filth of colonialism?
