King Mzee Guge
This is Oba Eweka II (1914 – 1933)He is dressed as a Yoruba noble. He was proud of his Yoruba ancestry. All past Obas of Benin were proud of their Yoruba heritage. The previous Oba Erediauwa did something really wrong and played a terrible role in the Yoruba/Edo rift simply because he had ego problems. He did not like that the Oni was rated above any other monarch in the region. He took three steps to confuse history and disrupt the great heritage of three great nation-states.The first thing he did was work with Abubakar Waziri to disrupt the rights of Utantan, the ancient nation-state of Igodomigodo and disgraced the noble house that leased his ancestors land to build a Yoruba colony and settlement patterned along with Yoruba spirituality. The next step was to discredit an important past court historian who observed the real truth of pastoral histories by doing his direct research from the palace courts. The last step was to create a fictional character that never existed. Corrupt Oduduwa’s name and claim he was some exiled prince of old Igodomigodo when in actual fact, the true history of Igodomigodo claimed that the supposed father of his fictional character died childlessly.Since, then, he has spread the complex to Edo people and they have added several layers to the revisionist stories in desperate attempts to cover one lie with another every time versions of the revisionist stories did not add up. Heights of it all were the making of false stories and claiming the lies as comments of the Oba of Lagos….His successor and current Oba of Benin, like his old ancestors however corrected this error. He made it clear that the elders went to Ife to request for a prince of Ife and not for some made-up fictional fugitive character. in his inauguration address, he noted'Historians all agree that Oduduwa sent his son Oranmiyan at the request of elders of Benin to return with them as rulers of their realm. Oranmiyan’s stay in Benin was short, but before he left, a child was born to him, who has later crowned Oba, as is known today as Eweka I. He was an Oba. He established Obaship in Benin, by implication, the listing of past Obas should begin from Oranmiyan.' ( words of the current Oba Eweka)
