Bowie, Charlotte Boone and Eleazer Birkhead were the biggest buyers of enslaved West African.We started our investigation reviewing Freedmen's Bureau Records, Freedman's Bank Records, Southern Claims Commission Records, Compensated Emancipation Records, Civil War Pension Files, Church Records, and the 1850 U.S. Census - Slave Schedule.After emancipation, once they could formally establish who they were absent of the enslaver's influence, many Black folks chose the surname Freeman or Freedman.
