THE ROOTS STORY KUNTA KINTE:Kunta kinte was a Mandinka warrior from Gambia West Africa. We believe he was captured by the tribe of .He later was sold and shipped to Annapolis, Maryland. We researched living records of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, slave owners, an found that John Battee, Abraham Birkhead, William D. Bowie, Charlotte Boone and Eleazer Birkhead were the biggest buyers of enslaved West African. We started our investigation reviewing Freedmen's Bureau Records, Freedman's Bank Records, Southern Claims Commission Records, Compensated Emancipation Records, Civil War Pension Files, Church Records, and the 1850 U.S. Census - Slave Schedule. After emancipation, once they could formally establish who they were absent of the enslaver's influence, many Black folks chose the surname Freeman or Freedman. Others went with Washington, Williams, Brown or Johnson surnames typical before enslavement. Ultimately, after intense research we came up with this picture of him. In our opinion.
