MÖHRINGEN AN DER DONAU & MÖHRINGEN (Stuttgart)The name Möhringen is of German origin and is believed to have roots in the Old High German language…“Möhr-” historically referred to a dark-skinned person. The term has also been used interchangeably with Negro.”-ingen” is a common suffix in German place names, often indicating a settlement or town, typically meaning “the people of” or “belonging to.”So, Möhringen can be roughly translated as “the settlement of the Moors” Both Möhringen (Stuttgart) and Möhringen an der Donau are in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany…Möhringen an der Donau is a district of Tuttlingen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany…It lies along the Danube River and has a rich history dating back to medieval times…In 1470, Möhringen an der Donau was granted its official coat of arms by Emperor Friedrich III…The emblem features a crowned Moor’s head, symbolizing both the town’s name and its association with the local noble family, the Herren von Möhringen…This distinctive symbol, referred to as the “Möhrin,” is prominently displayed on the Hechtbrunnen fountain in the town center…Möhringen (Stuttgart) is a district in the south of Stuttgart, also in Baden-Württemberg…In November 2023, Möhringen, a district of Stuttgart, introduced a new coat of arms following discussions about the previous design’s appropriateness…The former emblem featured a black Moor’s head, which had been criticized as racially insensitive…A petition in June 2020 garnered over 10,000 signatures, urging for its redesign…In response, the city initiated a competition in September 2021, inviting local artists to submit new designs…The selected design was refined by the heraldic firm Pro Heraldica and officially adopted in November 2023…I’m unsure how many so called Black residents of Stuttgart signed this petition, but I would estimate it was fewer than 50…If that is the case, those individuals likely lack historical knowledge to consider the coat of arms racially insensitive…Additionally, I find it unlikely that 10,000 so called white residents of Stuttgart would have pushed for its removal purely out of concern for racial sensitivity…If I had to make an educated guess, their motivation may have been to erase a part of their own so called Black historical connections rather than a genuine effort toward social justice…
