History books rarely mention it, but centuries before colonial rule, the Kanem Empire thrived in Central Africa. From the 9th to the 19th century, it was a powerful force, controlling trade routes, developing advanced governance, and spreading knowledge.Located in present-day Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, Kanem was ruled by the Sayfawa dynasty for over 1,000 years, a feat few civilizations on Earth can claim. It had a strong cavalry, a sophisticated taxation system, and diplomatic ties reaching as far as North Africa and the Middle East.Yet, when we talk about history, Africa is often reduced to a place of struggle. But our ancestors built empires, developed laws, and engaged in global trade long before colonialism. The Kanem Empire is just one of many proofs.Africa’s history is vast. It’s time to acknowledge all of it.
