A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF IJEBU IFEIjebu Ife, formerly a district within Ijebu Province, is located southeast of Ijebu Ode and consists of three distinct regions: Ijebu Ife settlement, Isele settlement, and a collection of villages and dispersed hamlets collectively named after Ogbere, the most prominent village, situated approximately 22 kilometers from Ijebu-Ode. Ogbere became the administrative center of Ijebu East Local Government in 1976. The Lekki Lagoon area to the south features an extensive lagoon shoreline and sandy beach, offering potential for tourism development.According to the Ajalorun, the traditional ruler of the region, the earliest Ijebu settlers migrated from Ile-Ife around 1450. A second wave of migration followed in 1470, led by the first Awujale, under whom the Ajalorun was placed. However, claims regarding his subjugation and later autonomy remain contested and disputed.HISTORICAL ACCOUNT:The following historical narrative aligns with traditional records passed down by the ancestors of Ajalorun, the town’s ruler:Olofin Ogbolu, the eldest son of King Oduduwa, ascended the throne after his father. During his early reign in Ile-Ife, a yearly Ifa divination revealed an ominous prophecy: unless Olofin Ogbolu and his chiefs relocated to another Yoruba territory to establish a new settlement, Ile-Ife and its surroundings would be engulfed by floods.Following ancestral tradition, Olofin Ogbolu adhered to the directive of Ifa. Alongside his chiefs and people, he traveled extensively but was repeatedly denied permission to settle, based on Ifa consultations. Some of these locations included:Emuren (Remo Division)Isiwu (Ikorodu Division)Erunwon and Ilefon (near Ijebu Ode)Odogbolu, Okemori, and Idotun (near Isonyin)Odongbodu, Egbe, Okeyejo, Okelugbogu, Imomo, and several others in Ilugun Alaro (Ijebu Division).Source: ogunupdate
