The Nago people are Yoruba-speaking individuals, mainly from the Kingdom of Ketu in Africa. During the slave trade, many Nagos were taken to Brazil. By the 1880s, they were the largest African group brought to Brazil.Nagos, along with other Yoruba people, helped shape Afro-Brazilian culture, religion (like Candomblé), and resistance movements.A rare 1869 photo shows a Nago albino slave in Pernambuco, Brazil. Taken by Alberto Henschel, this image reminds us of the African legacy in Brazil and the impact of slavery in the Americas.
